hrough the years - one of my favorite detours in
california has always been rural 'Road 306' -
...snaking along the base of the coastal range on the west side of the sacramento valley - this narrow little byway connects the tiny settlements of chrome and elk creek and stoneyford.
south of stoneyford - the road becomes desolate and a little scary. just the width of one car - the road goes from poorly paved to dirt to gravel to poorly paved. the road climbs along remote farms and ranches to find a third-world like drop down miles of switchbacks to the valley floor.
many has been the times i've taken to these backroads during the spring and summer - i was enthralled to discover how rich and colorful these hills are in this season of bare trees and rain.
stoney gorge dam
the dam (above) - the gate house (right) -
and the view towards eagle creek (below)
the dam is open and unguarded and pretty much lost in time - like everything else here.
road 306
at left is my view as the road climbs south from stoneyford. that flat space - just above the steering wheel is - believe it or not - the road.
below is a typical look of the road along its northern section. Fine road there.
