"Horses Before the Storm" / June 2000
I consider "Horses" to be my signature image. This photograph was taken during a road trip down the eastern flank of The Sierra in June of 2000. It was my first excursion as a sober alcoholic - and stands as a symbol of freedom from my thirty-four years of imprisonment by the
disease. Sober a little more than three months at the time this photograph was taken - I was exhilarated as I took this exposure in the growing wind. Thrilled that my head was clear and that I was again making images with a camera. My ability to work as a photographer was one of the countless things that had died inside of me over the endless nightmare with the obsession to drink.
To anyone reading this who thinks that they may have a problem with alcohol or drugs - I will say but one thing here. We have a disease that (with few exceptions) cannot be arrested without outside help. No more so than for a person with a diagnosed cancer. Will-power is useless to us by the nature of how the disease manifests within our bodies and minds. We come to a point where we literally are dying for a drink.

Oh, my ways are strange ways and new ways and old ways, and deep ways and steep ways and high ways and low.
I'm at home and at ease on a track that I know not,
and restless and lost on a road that I know.
